The Make It-Take It program of Adult & Community Education of Flagler County Schools is proud and honored to be part of The Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia and Flagler Counties Youth of the Year program. Make It-Take It is a program aimed at providing technology in the homes of those students in our communities who do not have access to technology except in school. The program collects computers from the community and teaches students how to use and refurbish them. Students have to completely strip the computers down and rebuild and upgrade them. After achieving this, the students are given the refurbished computers to keep as their own. The Make It-Take It program has donated some of these refurbished computers to Youth of the Year entrants over the past four years. This year the winner received an Apple Wireless laptop and the two runners up received an Apple Desktop computer. This is a tradition that MITI hopes to continue through the years. The MITI program has recently purchased a state-of-the-art mobile technology center, sponsored by Brighthouse Networks. The MITI bus will enable the program to be accessed by students in outreach areas, including The Boy’s and Girl Club in Flagler County.

With a donation of a 1978 GMC Motor Home to the Boys & Girls Club of Volusia/ Flagler County, by DeLand Businessman Bill Scovell, the Boys & Girls Club is quickly closing in on the purchase of the buildings and grounds at the Bright House Spring Hill Club Site. Proceeds from the sale of the motor home, to be sold on EBAY, will go towards the acquisition cost. The Club House, located in the Spring Hill CRA, is home to approximately 150 members and will be the first building that will be in Club ownership.

Past President Ed Lacey has been leading the fundraising campaign for acquisition of the Bright House Spring Hill Club building and grounds. Our Bright House Spring Hill Club is changing the face of this community”, said Mr. Lacey, “This is a wonderful contribution and will help us to meet our obligation towards the purchase of the Club site.”

Chief Professional Officer, Joe Sullivan, gave credit to Mr. Lacey for his work on behalf of the Club and the Bright House Spring Hill site, “Ed Lacey has been the heart and soul of the fundraising campaign to acquire this Club site. He has worked tirelessly to raise the money needed to make this our permanent home in a community of many needs.”

The Bright House Spring Hill Club expanded its Club House site last year by acquiring the Mt. Zion Church. A new learning center at the Club was named the Ed and Pauline Lacey Learning Center after former Board President Ed Lacey and his wife.

With 96% of the site acquisition costs complete, additional donations are being sought to complete the purchase. Donations can be made directly to the Club and dedicated for acquisition.

Boys and Girls from around the Club enjoyed an evening of Chirstmas Cheer when they gathered at St. Peters Church in Deland for Christmas Around the World, a Club wide event where our youth perform in skits and songs and prepare food from different countries and cultures.

Boys & Girls Club members from Palmetto Park & Holly Hill Clubs were recently treated to a special book reading by Celebrity Readers Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood and School Board Member Candace Lankford. The event, which took place, November 14, at the Barnes and Noble Book Store in Daytona Beach, was part of a month long partnership by the store and the Club to increase the book selections at the Clubs’ clubhouse.

The Barnes & Noble Bookfair helped the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties in several ways. First, a percentage of bookfair sales went to underwrite the Palmetto Park & Holly Hill Unit reading clubs. Second, the two Clubs were able to create a wish list for selections to enhance its own library collection

“It is important that our Club members, many from disadvantaged homes, have an appreciation for books and for reading.” said Mike Medford, Senior Field Director with the Club. “ Reading is a critical life skill and Chief Chitwood and School Board Member Lankford, by their example, showed the kids how important and how much fun reading can be. “
